The annual Easter Passion play staged in the Old Harbour on Good Friday has become a major event on the Hermanus cultural calendar, which thousands attend.

The play depicts the life of Jesus Christ from birth to crucifixion, with the cliff walls of the harbour providing the stage. Several dozen local people participate in the production which is enhanced by lighting, music and laser effects. With its spectacular cliffs, gentle grass slopes and constant background music provided by the sea, the Old Harbour must certainly rate as one of the most spectacular amphitheatres in the world.
